Veneration of the Unknown
The Saint with no face.
The Meaning Behind
Veneration of the Unknown explores the idea of sanctity beyond physical identity. Saints are remembered through their actions, sacrifices, and miracles — yet they are often recognized first by their image and face.
By removing the face entirely, the painting questions this contradiction. The figure becomes anonymous, shifting the focus away from identity and toward symbolism, devotion, and spiritual presence. The crown of thorns and the red cross covering the face transform the figure into something both sacred and unreachable, suspended between reverence and erasure.

The Anatomy of the Painting
The faceless figure stands as a symbol of anonymity and spiritual detachment. By removing the face, the painting rejects personal identity and asks the viewer to look beyond physical recognition.
The crown of thorns references suffering, sacrifice, and martyrdom, directly echoing the image of a Saint. It places the figure within a sacred context while also emphasizing pain and devotion.
The red cross covering the face acts as both a mark of sanctity and concealment. Its material presence obscures individuality, transforming the figure into an icon rather than a person. The contrast between the red cross and the absence of facial features creates tension between revelation and erasure, faith and silence.

The Making Of
Veneration of the Unknown was created using oil paint on canvas with a limited palette of black, white, and red. The restrained use of color was intended to reinforce the painting’s symbolic and emotional weight.
The monochromatic surface creates a quiet, almost sacred atmosphere, while the red elements introduce tension and immediacy. Thick layers of oil paint and soft distortions were used to give the figure a worn, icon-like presence, balancing between religious imagery and contemporary expression.
The process focused on reduction — removing unnecessary detail to allow symbolism, texture, and silence to become the central language of the painting.
